Attorneys Reform Judicial System
A fascinating article that is directly related to my work with American Bar Association's Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative ("CEELI") was published today, regarding judicial reform in Iraq. The article, written by Susan Logue in "Voice of America," states, "As Iraqis follow the trial of Saddam Hussein in their news media, they are witnessing something that is unfamiliar to them: a trial based on evidence, conducted in an open court." The article continues, explaining how unprecedented this trial and this entire type of court system is in Iraq, giving new faith to Iraqis that had lost it from living under Saddam Hussein's secret court system (a "knock in the middle of the night," leading to a family member being taken away on an unknown charge and never seen again). Regaining confidence in the rule of law is the challenge I am helping conquer through my work at CEELI, while I study which reforms work and which fail in countries throughout the world.
