A Vote Against The New Council

We must not let the victims of human rights abuses throughout the world think that U.N. member states were willing to settle for 'good enough,'" Mr. John Bolton, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, said in a statement after the UN overwhelmingly adopted a new Human Rights Council to replace the widely discredited Human Rights Commission. "We must not let history remember us as the architects of a council that was a 'compromise' and merely 'the best we could do' rather than one that ensured doing 'all we could do' to promote human rights."

While there were modest improvements with the Council from the Commission (such as the reduction in members), there were also many compromises made that arguably will make the Council less effective. It will be interesting to follow the decisions. I am cautiously optimistic.
