A Nuclear Stand-Off

Iran postponed talks with European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana in Brussels from yesterday until today in apparent anger at an exiled opposition leader's visit to the European parliament. The preliminary talks, now due to be held today with more detailed discussions next Tuesday, July 11, 2006, will address the EU offer of a package of technology, trade and other incentives to halt uranium enrichment, to which the EU expects a formal response from Iran soon. However, Iran has defied international calls for an early reply to the offer aimed at ending a nuclear stand-off, insisting that it will use next Tuesday's meeting to raise questions on the package instead. While the EU has stated that it wants a formal response by a July 15th Group of Eight summit in St. Petersburg at the latest, Iran insists it will not give its answer before August 22.

Scott,

It's nice to read a good concise account of the stories some of us have been following in the 'broadsheets' in the UK form a US perspective. It's also good to see first hand someone who works in the legal / political side of things in the US as, short of C-Span on the web and CNN it's not something we get a great deal of coverage of over here.
An excellent blog.

Paul.
